Friendship Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August in India. Celebration of ‘Friendship Day’ celebrations started in the West, but in India too, it has been becoming popular among the youth for the past few years. People greet each other on greeting cards, social media and SMS on this day.

According to experts, the idea behind Friendship Day was conceptualised by the greetings card industry. A lot of people criticize it as a commercial movement to sell merchandise and solely add to the pockets of the already thriving greetings card industry then. Interestingly, it caught the fancy of the masses and soon it became an international event. In this age when people hardly buy greetings cards, this day is still very popular among people worldwide including countries like India, Bangladesh etc.
Friendship Day originated in America in 1935. It is said that on the first Sunday of August, the US government killed an innocent person and in whose sorrow his friend committed suicide. After which the South American people were offered a proposal to celebrate International Friendship Day in front of the US Government.
After this incident, the government had earlier refused to accept this proposal of the people, but in order to calm their anger, the US government later approved this proposal in about 1958 after 21 years. After the first Sunday of August, Jake started to celebrate Friendship Day.
Importance of Friendship
In the famous Hindu epic ‘Mahabharata’, Lord Krishna demonstrates the many colors of friendship – affection, romance, brotherhood, protection, guidance, intimacy and even teasing. Friendship is all about these and much more.
Also, In the Bible, the primary text of the western civilization, reflects upon friendship as the bond that forms the foundation to human faith, trust and companionship. Following verses from the bible aptly portray the importance of friends:
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
“Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

–There is a lesser known day which is observed on the third Sunday of September to celebrate the friendship between women. It is called Women’s Friendship Day.
–Did you know there is a whole month designated as Friendship Month? Yes, February is that month of the year which has earned this unique distinction.
–Surprisingly, the third week of May is observed as Old Friends, New Friends Week.
–Exchanging cards, tying friendship bands or going out with friends for dinner to celebrate the day are common practices. But there is also a less popular custom of giving pink and yellow roses to friends who have been with each other during difficult times.
