On Tuesday morning, She had apparently hanged herself with a scarf attached to a doorknob. Her husband was in the house at the time, according to law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity.
What were the circumstances of her death?
The designer was found by her housekeeper who had arrived at the Park Avenue apartment in Manhattan to find her “unresponsive”, a law enforcement official said.
The NYPD’s chief of detectives, Dermot Shea, said that while investigators were still in the early stages of their inquiry, evidence including the state of the apartment and the presence of a note pointed to “a tragic suicide.”
It’s unclear how long Spade had been dead. She left behind a note, police said. Her family declined to discuss its contents.
“We are all devastated by today’s tragedy,” Spade’s family said in a statement through a spokesman. “Our family loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy is respected as we grieve during this very difficult time.”
At same time Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, paid tribute to the fashion designer via Twitter.
“My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college. I still have it. Holding Kate’s family, friends and loved ones in my heart.”
